In 1899 Kaiser Wilhelm II opened the old boatlift. The lift was the biggest and most spectacular structure on the old Dortmund-Ems-Kanal. It made the access to the Dortmund Port possible. The boatlift was able to accommodate the then usual boats on the Dortmund-Ems-Kanal, 67 meters long, 8.2 meters wide, with a draft of 2 meters and lift it through a height of 14 meters to the level of the Dortmund Port.
