Race training with British Olympic Coach Jim Saltenstall. Sportsboat “Savage Sailing Team” gybes and rides gale Force 7 and 30+ knot gusts under big spinnaker on The Solent in the UK. Nose diving through rough seas and waves full on sailing to the max flat out on the plane.

Could have done with the weight a little further back, the bow always seeems to be hitting the next wave.

Wow, that sounds fun! I summer on Islesboro. Most of my experience is 420s, lasers, or mercs though.

Yeah j/80s are really fun boats and very beginner friendly.. I hit 20 knots once in a squall in open waters 15-20 foot waves.. boat sounds like its gonna fall appart.. does your j/80s also hum at 8/12/16 knots?

Why is it call a 420? Do you have to be high to sail it?
June 15th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Ok so it’s a 20 knot shitbox….impressive

HOW can a MONOhull be so fast?Ithought only unballsted multhulls could sail like this.
June 15th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

June 15th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Hey if you ever need crew to reach those speeds out in the Bay, let me know.

Nice! What was it blowing? I have a J/80 in the Eggemoggin reach in Maine. We get nice breezes, but it’s always just a bit too tight for the A-sail. Jerich Bay gives us some fun, but with all the damn islands, we run out of water. I’ve got to get out in the Gulf of Maine some time and try to get those speeds.

that boat just plows through the water doesn’t it
June 15th, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Hi Ernst,
I have two of them. Sail In San Francisco where the winds are daily in the 20-25 knots range. It is a lovely boat. Safe and stable. Two can sail comfortably. My 8 year old granddaughter drives her. I suggest you try for few sails to decide.
PS. You don’t have to sail in 30-35 knot winds to get her going 19.5

Fantastic! I am so inspired by the sea, I paint abstract yachts depicted in extreme conditions – I love it!! Jean (from the UK – check out my art video, the extreme yacht racing one – you’ll love it!)
